4 Sanitary Magnetic Separators Designed For Pharmaceutical Companies
If you’re in the pharmaceutical industry, you know the importance of sanitary processing equipment…and that includes magnetic separators.
In an age where many and varied magnet designs are easily accessible from all over the world, it is crucial that your magnets are not only effective in the separation of ferrous contamination but are also of sanitary design and build and will not be detrimental to food safety.
USDA Accepted Magnetic Separators
It is usually a good indication of sanitary design if magnetic separators have been accepted by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and certified for use in dairy and pharmaceutical applications.
Since 2015, specially designed Magnattack RE80 Magnets for powder and dry product lines have held USDA Certification. More recently in 2019, the Emulsion & Slurry Pipeline Magnet received USDA Certification for sensitive liquid applications.
The magnets approved and designed for pharmaceutical applications include:
- Mag-Ram Automatic Self-Cleaning Separator
- Rapidclean Grate Magnet (in housing)
- Powder Transfer Magnet
- Emulsion & Slurry Pipeline Separator
Mag-Ram Automatic Self-Cleaning Magnetic Separators
The RE80 Mag-Ram Magnetic Separator enables continuous automatic cleaning of magnet bars (Rams) without the need to stop the process.
- Eliminates the need for operators to manually clean magnet bars & restricts human contact with the product stream
- Incremental rotation of the magnet bars ensures minimal material build-up and blockage, hence reducing mould and potential growth of harmful bacteria remaining in the product zone. This feature also reduces product wastage.
- Fully certified and accepted by USDA as meeting the requirements of sanitary design for sensitive dairy and pharma applications.

Rapidclean Grate Magnets
The RE80 Rapidclean Grate Magnet features open-ended magnet bars inside a sanitary dust-tight stainless-steel housing. The system was designed to promote hygienic magnetic separation, which is one reason stainless-steel sleeves are not included in Rapidclean units (or any Magnattack RE80 Grate Magnet designs).
- Cleaning is conducted outside of the product stream, reducing recontamination risks
- Allowance for thorough visual inspection of magnet bars prior to return to the product stream allows operators to ensure all fragments are removed and bars are in good condition (cracks, swelling, and other damage can be a food safety concern)
- Specially built Rapidclean Cleaning Tools enable cleaning of magnet bars with minimal hand contact

Powder Transfer Magnets
The RE80 Powder Transfer Magnet is engineered to provide highly efficient and effective metal separation in high-velocity powder lines, without experiencing bulk density or blockage problems.
Acutex Probe Magnets designed to retain collected fragments away from oncoming product, reducing recontamination risks & increasing metal fragment control
- Aerodynamically designed to minimize bulk density breakdown and blockage – this also ensures no ponding on product or CIP fluid
- Designed to enable cleaning of magnets away from the magnet and stream of product, reducing recontamination risks
_
Emulsion & Slurry Pipeline Magnet
The RE80HT Emulsion Magnet is engineered to achieve effective foreign metal fragment control and risk reduction in thick and viscous liquids, slurries, and emulsion lines.
- Acutex Probe Magnets allow for smooth transition of product around magnet
- No cracks or crevices that product can build up in
- Collected fragments are ‘washed’ to the back of the Acutex Probe and safely retained away from the oncoming product stream – greatly reducing recontamination risks

Make an informed decision on new magnetic separators.
Consider these important questions prior to purchasing new magnets for your pharmaceutical applications:
- Is the magnet of sanitary design and build?
- Is it compliant with USDA specifications?
- Is the cleaning process sanitary and simple to ensure least possible intrusion to product zone?
- Can it be easily accessed for cleaning (if a manual-clean design)?
- In the case of difficult products (such as lactose) what means are taken to prevent build-up and binding of cleaning mechanisms?
- Is the magnet resistant to abrasion?
- Does the separator assembly comprise of high-grade magnetics (such as RE80) to ensure longevity and maintaining of magnet strength?
- What design criteria is in place to ensure effective magnetic separation is achieved without blockages?
- What means are taken to ensure magnet strength is maintained over time?
- Does the magnet comply with current HACCP and best practice standards (e.g. 0909MAGSEP 1-2010)?
- Is the magnet supplied with proper certification?
