Each magnet functions as a ram of a pneumatic cylinder, eliminating issues of ‘walking’ or ‘jamming’ when cleaning multiple bars simultaneously—problems commonly faced with traditional designs that rely on coordinating two air cylinders to operate a bank of magnet bars through a shared wiper. The conventional cleaning methods have often been troublesome, but the Mag-Ram design allows for tight wiper seals, ensuring optimal control and highly efficient magnet cleaning.

How does the Mag-Ram Work?
The Mag-Ram boasts a distinctive design where the ram of a pneumatic cylinder functions as a high-strength magnet. When the ram retracts, a specialized sealing mechanism pushes magnetic contaminants to the end of the ram, where they drop into a separate chamber outside the product zone.
This design incorporates a 2″ (50 mm) diameter magnet bar instead of the standard 1″ (25 mm) diameter, enhancing coverage area, improving product dwell time, and effectively keeping fragments away from the product flow. The 2″ (50 mm) magnet also generates a stronger magnetic field, reducing the need for multiple conventional-style magnets.
How much product waste is there with the cleaning of the Mag-Ram?
The Mag-Ram features a designated lane for contaminated product samples, allowing for a higher ratio of contaminants compared to clean products. When this lane is emptied, the contaminants are clearly visible, making it easier to identify issues with minimal product waste. This allows the operator to program the cleaning to match the burden of contaminants being found. Additionally, the rams rotate 13 degrees before retracting which helps tip off any usable clean product and reduce repetitive wear on each ram.
How often should you clean it?
Every application is different. Certain products contain more metal than others; for example, products in milling or meat rendering processes require more frequent cleaning due to the higher metal content associated with these applications. In contrast, infant nutritional powder requires less frequent cleaning, as the presence of metal contaminants is minimal. The Mag-Ram cleaning function allows you to make adjustments as necessary.
How is the cleaning process managed? Can it be configured for periodic cleaning?
The Mag-Ram offers great versatility in its control options. The unit is equipped with standard proximity sensors, allowing it to be integrated into a PLC system for managing cleaning cycles and parameters through the internal PLC. Additionally, an optional standalone control module is available as a “plug and play” solution for control.
Alternatively, if only power-assisted cleaning is needed instead of automated cleaning, a simple toggle lever can be provided, enabling an operator to pull the toggle to activate the cleaning of all magnets simultaneously.
Can you clean these magnets while the process is still running?
Yes! This system is quite unique in this regard. Parameters can be configured so that each individual ram can clean one at a time, allowing the other magnets to remain in the product while one magnet ram is in the cleaning cycle. This setup enables each ram to take turns cleaning while maintaining the protective function of the remaining magnets.
If an individual cylinder needs to be replaced, do I need to shut down my entire processing system?
The modular design of the Mag-Ram allows for individual cylinders to be removed without shutting down an entire processing line. Individual cylinders can be removed and replaced while the Mag-Ram continues to function.
What maintenance is required for Mag-Ram?
Mag-Rams feature a traveling seal system that requires maintenance based on the types and quantities of products and contaminants. These seals can be easily and affordably replaced at intervals determined by these factors. Quarterly intervals are recommended but should be replaced annually at minimum.
What size does the Mag-Ram come in?
The Mag-Ram features a modular design that can be customized to suit a variety of applications. In certain cases, it can accommodate up to four rows of magnets, offering optimal protection in sensitive, high-volume environments.
